Our winemaker is internationally acclaimed Brian Light. Brian was winner of the prestigious Australasian Winemaker of the Year 1987/88 and twice Bushing King, McLaren Vale's highest award. Born and bred on a vineyard Brian gained an early insight into viticulture and the wine industry. Through his family's interests in the wine industry it led him to winemaking and in 1973 he completed the Roseworthy Oenology course.

Brian has now had extensive experience both in Australia and overseas and has an array of clients to whom he consults. He has won numerous awards and accolades over this period. As a major part of his philosophy of making red wines he is an advocate of fruit expression with subtle complexities from oak and maturation. Overall he is looking for a balanced wine style, good with food and which will be enhanced by bottle maturation.

As the premium Cape Barren Wines are from single vineyards Brian wants this vineyard expression to be evident so cross blending is kept to a minimum. With the careful selection of the premium grapes, production in a facility which allows the use of the latest winemaking techniques, use of the best oak to complement the fruit and careful attention to detail Cape Barren Wines, with Brian's help, has established an enviable record in a short time.
