The Native Goose Shiraz is sourced from selected McLaren Vale and Willunga vineyards grown on a mixture of rich clay soils and red/brown loams. A small proportion is sourced from our vineyard in Blewitt Springs, the same block used for our iconic Reserve Release Old Vine Shiraz. The combination of moderate rainfall, fertile soil and warm weather conditions yield a concentrated, deeply coloured wine. Usual moderate spring conditions and good rainfall of the region typically provide a balanced crop set of small-berried grapes with an average yield of about three tonne per acre. Dry, sunny and cool days through summer in McLaren Vale provide ideal conditions for slow, even flavour and sugar development. As temperatures warm through March and April the flavour and sugar accumulation intensifies this generally leads to a harvest date in early April.
This wine is traditionally run off skins and pressed at 2 degrees Baume and one third transferred to 10% new and old French oak barrels to finish fermentation. The balance of the wine is then transferred to one and two year old French and American oak barrels mid year. The wine is bottled with minimal filtration. The Native Goose Shiraz characteristically displays an inky crimson red colour with rich aromas of plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and fertile earth. Flavours of black cherry and prune fruits is backed by complex nuances of espresso and toasty oak. The wine has a finish with persistent length of flavour supported by soft, silky tannins.
